Installation

Cultivated turf allows you to enjoy a lawn of instant beauty and maturity without the usual time-consuming hassles of seeding. When purchasing turfgrass sod, consult a Buy Sod producer in your area to be assured that you are getting the finest quality turf available. Follow these basic steps to a beautiful lawn and to ensure your 30-day guarantee.

HOW TO INSTALL NEW TURFGRASS SOD

  1. Measure the area you intend to sod. Include these measurements on a sketch of the lawn with the length, width, and any unusual features.
  2. Soil test your lawn area with the assistance of a qualified service in your area or purchase a soil test kit from your local garden center.
  3. Till the area to a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches.
  4. Rake in fertilizer, lime, compost, etc., as needed to a depth of 3 to 4 inches.
  5. Firm the soil by irrigating and/or rolling with a lawn roller 1/3 full of water. This will reveal any low areas that need more soil. Keep the grade one inch below sidewalks or driveways.
  6. Finish grade the entire area with a tractor-mounted box blade for large areas, or heavy duty rake for smaller sites.
  7. Water the prepared area before sodding to settle soil and provide a moist base for turf.
  8. Install your new sod immediately upon delivery. Begin installing turf along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk. Butt and push edges and ends together tightly without stretching.
  9. Begin watering newly laid sod within 30 minutes of installation. Turf is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture to survive. In hot weather protect un-laid sod by placing pallets in shade.
  10. Keep new sod consistently moist for the first 14 days following installation. You can begin mowing when sod has rooted—generally 10-21 days. Never remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade at each mowing.  Enjoy your new lawn!
