With the summer months coming to an end, it is important to take the proper steps to protect and nurture your lawn for the coming seasons. Even though mowing may slow down soon, don’t forget other preventive measures that can help your turfgrass stay healthy during dormant times, and return to healthy, beautiful turf in the spring.

  • Rake the Leaves. Don’t let a layer of dead leaves deprive your turfgrass of the sunlight and nutrients it still needs.
  • Weed Control. If you’ve had trouble with broadleaf weeds, autumn is the time for herbicide. Always read package instructions before applying.
  • Aerate. This helps water, oxygen and fertilizer get to grass roots.
  • Fertilize. Especially if you only fertilize once a year, fall is the time to get maximum benefit as grass can have a reserve of nutrients for next spring.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you’ve invested in a beautiful, healthy lawn, be sure you’re taking the proper steps to prepare and protect in the coming colder weather.
