Champion Dwarf Bermuda

Ultradwarf
Exceptional Putting Quality
Champion Dwarf Bermuda is a pioneering ultradwarf hybrid bermudagrass developed specifically for high-performance golf turf. Its exceptionally fine texture, dense growth habit, vigorous lateral spread, and naturally low profile allow it to produce an exceptionally smooth, uniform playing surface. Champion is particularly well suited to golf course putting greens where precision, ball roll, and close mowing are essential.

Attributes & Benefits

Low-growing habit allow for extremely low mowing heights for premium playing surfaces.

Dense lateral growth produces a tight, uniform turf canopy

Very fine leaf blades contribute to a smooth, refined appearance

Strong stolon and rhizome development

Produces little to no seedhead development under turf culture, helping maintain surface uniformity.

Well suited to producing fast, smooth, consistent putting surfaces.

Pedigree
Champion Dwarf Bermuda was selected in 1987 from an unusual patch of Tifdwarf hybrid bermudagrass growing on a putting green in Walker County, Texas. Champion was propagated vegetatively from a single sprig and subsequently developed by the Brown family of Champion Turf Farms in Bay City, Texas. It became the first commercially developed ultradwarf bermudagrass cultivar and is protected under U.S. Plant Patent No. 9,888.

Best Management Practices
Mowing: Champion is designed for extremely close mowing and is primarily managed as a golf course putting green. Maintaining a consistent, sharp mowing height is essential to achieving its characteristic playing quality.
Thatch Management: Because Champion produces dense lateral growth, thatch can accumulate quickly. Regular verticutting, core or solid-tine aeration, and sand topdressing are important components of a successful management program.
Topdressing: Frequent light applications of compatible sand help maintain surface smoothness, manage thatch, and support a consistent putting surface.
Watering: Irrigation should be carefully managed to maintain adequate moisture without creating excessively soft or saturated playing conditions.
Fertility & Growth Regulation: Champion performs best under a precise, closely monitored fertility and growth-management program. Nitrogen and growth-regulator applications should be adjusted according to growing conditions, mowing frequency, and desired playing characteristics.
Professional Management: Champion is a highly specialized ultradwarf turfgrass and requires significantly more intensive management than conventional lawn bermudagrasses. It is best suited to experienced turf managers and dedicated golf-course maintenance programs.
