When it comes to picking the right grass seed for your lawn, it’s all about where you live.
Generally speaking, lawn grass comes in two categories: warm season and cool season.
Warmer climate grasses do best in those brutal, hot summers and mild winters typical of the lower west coast, south and southwest. Types of this grass include Bahia, Centipede, Bermuda, Buffalo, Zoysia and St. Augustine. Cooler climate turf performs best in the mild summers and harsh winters you find in the north, midwest, northeast and mid-atlantic. These include Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, Tall Fescue and Fine Fescue.
There’s also a transition zone that stretches from east to west across the country in which either style can perform well if maintained properly.
